From eroding land, soil (mixtures of sand, silt, and clay) are carried by streams and rivers into lakes and oceans. As the stream/river enters the larger bodies of water, its current slows, and particles are deposited according to their size at different locations. The following is a video animation showing how coarse material, sand, silt, and clay are distributed into separate deposits as streams/rivers enter larger bodies of water. (A subsequent video animation shows how these deposits become sandstones and shales respectively.
