After kids have mastered the concepts of an element’s symbol, atomic number, and atomic weight, you can show them a “periodic table”.

With your kids, go over how the table displays each element by its chemical symbol and gives its name in smaller print. Have kids note how elements are arranged in horizontal rows according to atomic number (the number at the top of the box). Remember that the atomic number is the number of protons in each atom of the element. The number of electrons will be the same as the number of protons. The number at the bottom of each box is the average atomic mass/weight of the element. It is the number of protons plus neutrons. Subtract the number of protons from the atomic number and you will have the average number of neutrons.

The color coding is to group elements with similar chemical properties. For example, the dark purple column at the right are all inert gases.
