As the following video lecture describes, the Kingdom Protista includes a wide diversity of organisms that have characteristics that preclude them from being classified as plants, animals, or fungi. Most, but not all, exist as single cells–protozoa–or small groups of cells. Have students take note of the three major groups described and reflect on the tremendous diversity and capabilities of a single cell. Further, consider that certain cells in our bodies, likewise, exhibit these attributes: flagella, cilia, and amoeboid action (see text).
