Beyond sound waves, another kind of wave is what you see when you jerk the end of a rope quickly up and down. The up-down wave continues to travel down the length of rope. The following video (first half) describes how/why this sort of wave propagates itself. The same explanation can be applied to waves on water (and to electromagnetic
