How a gasoline engine works–video animation
The following is video animation showing how a typical engine works. Such engines are the power source for all types of vehicles, construction equipment, lawn mowers, etc. (Diesel engines work the same except that the heat of compression suffices to ignite the air-fuel mixture.)
Have students note how the temperature-pressure-volume relationship applies. That is: the power pushing the piston down comes from the sudden increase in temperature, hence pressure, caused by the combustion of the air-fuel mixture.
