Obesity: Students may reason that more energy rich “junk foods” will result in their being more energetic. Emphasize how the reverse may be the result. Putting more energy foods into the body, by itself, does not result in producing more ATP, does not make the muscles want to work harder. It is the other way about. Muscles working use ATP. ATP –>ADP + P causes more oxidation of glucose to regenerate the ATP. If there is more glucose standing by than is needed for ATP regeneration, that glucose is converted to fat and put into storage on the body. Continuing results in obesity.
The only way known to make the muscles work harder is the will and drive to make them work harder, i.e., if not part of mandatory daily activities, it requires exercise.
Have students observe how excess calories leading to obesity says nothing about having adequate or inadequate amounts of the essential nutrients. A diet with excessive junk foods can simultaneously result in both obesity and malnutrition.
Holding a desirable weight (with gain commensurate to growth in height) it shows you are in energy balance.
