A plethora of photos of Earth take from space show the atmosphere as a relatively thin layer surrounding the Earth. See:
Weather satellites, communication satellites, the Hubble Space telescope, the Space Station, etc. are all positioned above the atmosphere, albeit that the Earth’s atmosphere does not have a distinct edge; it just becomes thinner and thinner until it is basically “outer space.”
