A capacitor is a very simple electrical device. As described in the first video below it is basically two plates separated by an insulating material. To increase the effective size, the plates often consist of two ribbons of aluminum foil separated by a ribbon of wax paper all rolled together. Simple as they are, the ability of a capacitor to rapidly (almost instantaneously) accept, hold, and then release an electric charge has innumerable uses electrical circuits, as described in the second video.
