Before the invention and development of microscopes, the microorganisms that cause disease were totally unknown.
The cause of diseases being a total mystery, conspiracy theories filled the void. The most widely believed theory was “spontaneous generation” — living things spontaneously arose from nonliving matter. It took careful observation and experimentation to debunk this idea and prove that living things could only arise from preexisting living things of the same species, as seen in the following video:
