It is best to introduce the chemical elements to kids with a simple alphabetical list:

They can easily see that the chemical symbol is a simple abbreviation of the of the element’s name. They can find that they are already familiar with number of elements, e.g., oxygen, iron, silver, gold. Just as importantly, many things they are familiar with, e.g., water, are not elements. Introducing chemistry by showing kids the periodic table is a turn-off. For most, it will only cause overwhelm, confusion, and panic.
