This lesson, “Organizing Things into Categories”, needs to go far beyond this single session and the few activities described. The thought processes of organizing things into categories is a fundamental way of thinking, learning, and reasoning that will be used throughout life with great benefit. To fully instill and develop this thinking skill, students will need continual reminders, and “hints” make use of it as they move forward. For example, as you move into lessons A-2, B-2, B-3 and/or C-1, give emphasis to how we are taking separate things and putting them together into logical categories: solids, liquids and gases are states of matter; heat, electricity, light are forms of energy, distinct from matter, etc. Therefore, this lesson is very important but only the introduction to this thinking skill.
