Development of the fruit develops follows fertilization. The ovule develops into the seed,   the fertilized egg develops into the plant embryo within the seed. The ovary develops into the fleshy parts of the fruit surrounding the seed(s). It is hard to imagine a large watermelon or pumpkin developing from the ovary of a flower, but this is what happens.

Have students examine the ovaries of given flowers and see how they resemble the fruit. For example, the number seeds within a pumpkin flower is equaled by the number of ovules within the ovary.
